More than 30 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea of everyone’s basic human right to adequate shelter by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day. The special designation also serves as a reminder that everyone has the power and responsibility to shape the future of the cities and towns in which we reside.
One organization that has been instrumental in progressing housing as a fundamental human right is Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the United States and in approximately 70 countries. Habitat’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Habitat works toward their vision by helping families build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. The organization welcomes volunteers of all races, religions, and nationalities to construct, repair, and improve homes.
Rotary’s areas of focus align closely with the vision of Habitat for Humanity to ensure everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat works in partnership with supporters, organizations, and community leaders to serve families, facilitate more inclusive housing systems, and advocate for improved shelter worldwide. By partnering with Habitat, local organizations and districts gain access to technical expertise and can equip families with the foundational support and resources to build stronger lives for themselves and their communities.
For many families who were already struggling with a need for decent and affordable housing, their daily lives have only become more challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For others who find themselves affected by the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, the future is newly uncertain. These are the families who, now more than ever, need adequate shelter and affordable housing solutions. Read more about how Habitat is continuing to pursue its mission during COVID-19.
Today, on World Habitat Day, and every day, Habitat for Humanity reminds us to join together as a global community in sharing the message that a decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health and success.
